WASHING TIPS

WASHING To test for colour fastness - Leave a piece of damp cotton wool on an unseen part of the garment (maybe the hem) for about 5 minuets. If any dye comes off it is a good idea to cool hand wash instead of machine washing. ****** To make your own fabric softener mix one part white vinegar, one part bicarbonate of soda and two parts water. This is good for people with sensitive skin. ******

HAND WASHING If you live in a hard water area put a dessert spoon of bicarbonate of soda in to the water when hand washing delicates. This softens the water ****** Always make sure all the washing powder has fully dissolved into the water before adding the dirty laundry. This prevents white marks being left on some items. ******

MACHINE WASHING Before you machine wash delicates put them in a pillow case and tie up at the end. This helps eliminate some of the battering they get during the cycle. ****** To prevent wear and fading of woolen garments ensure you turn them inside out before putting them in the machine. ******

STAIN REMOVAL For dirty collars apply a little bit of washing-up liquid before washing in the usual way. ****** A very handy tip for seeing to stains when you are away from home is to rub the affected area with a baby wipe. They work very well indeed. ****** If you are using a strong detergent or stain remover to get rid of bad stains rub it in with a tooth brush, nail brush or a small clean paint brush. This helps to work it into the fabric. ******
