WASHING TIPS

WASHING

To test for colour fastness - Leave a piece of damp cotton wool on an unseen part of the garment (maybe the hem) for about 5 minuets. If any dye comes off it is a good idea to cool hand wash instead of machine washing.

To make your own fabric softener mix one part white vinegar, one part bicarbonate of soda and two parts water. This is good for people with sensitive skin.

HAND WASHING

If you live in a hard water area put a dessert spoon of bicarbonate of soda in to the water when hand washing delicates. This softens the water

******

Always make sure all the washing powder has fully dissolved into the water before adding the dirty laundry. This prevents white marks being left on some items.

******

MACHINE WASHING

Before you machine wash delicates put them in a pillow case and tie up at the end. This helps eliminate some of the battering they get during the cycle.

******

To prevent wear and fading of woolen garments ensure you turn them inside out before putting them in the machine.

STAIN REMOVAL

For dirty collars apply a little bit of washing-up liquid before washing in the usual way.

******

A very handy tip for seeing to stains when you are away from home is to rub the affected area with a baby wipe. They work very well indeed.

******

If you are using a strong detergent or stain remover to get rid of bad stains rub it in with a tooth brush, nail brush or a small clean paint brush. This helps to work it into the fabric.
